Lucio Del Pezzo

Lucio Del Pezzo was born on December 13, 1933, in Naples, Italy. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and the Institute of Applied Arts. In 1958, together with artists such as Luca (Luigi Castellano) and Mario Persico, he was one of the founders of the neo-surrealist and neo-Dadaist Group 58, which exhibited in Naples, Florence, Rome, and Milan. During this period, he developed his artistic language, creating works described as “object-paintings,” works that often include collages of found objects and folk prints, combining painting and sculpture. In 1960 he moved to Paris. He had his first solo exhibition in New York in the same year and in 1968 his first solo exhibition in Paris. In 1973 he made a work for the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2000, the Mathildenhohe Institute in Darmstadt presented the first major retrospective of his work in Germany. Lucio Del Pezzo passed away on April 12, 2020, in Milan, Italy.
